IKHAYALETHU was first produced in Durban under the title, COMING HOME. It was the first production of the Work-in-Progress Theatre Company and was presented at the Hermit Theatre in August 1982. The play was in two acts. The Detainees' Support Committee of Durban sponsored the first performance.
When the play was revived in 1987 and presented at the Laager, in the Market Theatre Complex in Johannesburg, it was cut down to one act and formed part of a double bill with NOBODY'S HERO. The Detainees ‘Parents' Support Committee of Johannesburg sponsored the opening performance. The 1987 version of the play makes reference to the elections in which the Progressive Federal Party lost its status as the official opposition in the white parliament.
